Czech Republic Ambassador presents letters of credence

His Excellency Vladimir Eisenbruk, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Saint Lucia presented his letters of credence to the Governor General Saint Lucia Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenac in an official ceremony at the State House. The Czech Republic which has enjoyed diplomatic relations with the country for the past twelve years, also hopes to establish an honorary consulate in Saint Lucia.

Alleged Indian fraudster CIP citizen

According to Indian media reports, diamond trader Mehul Choski who is wanted for an alleged billion dollar bank fraud in India, is in possession of an Antigua & Barbuda passport. The Antigua & Barbuda Citizenship by Investment Unit has confirmed that Choski obtained citizenship last year after extensive vetting by reputable agencies, to include the CARICOM Implementing Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS), which revealed no derogatory information on the wanted man.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is warning the Mia Mottley-led Administration that it must be prepared to stand by its tough decisions as they will impact the supporters. The warning comes as the country moves closer to implementing its structural adjustment programme with the international financial institution. The IMF expert also stressed that management and efficient implementation of the reform agenda was critical.

PM willing to pass law to make CCJ SVG’s final court

At the special sitting of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in Kingstown to pay tribute to Justice Adrian Saunders, the newly elected President who is also a Vincentian, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves says he is willing to bring to Parliament a law to replace the London-based Privy Council with the CCJ as the country’s highest court, although voters rejected such in a referendum about a decade ago. Gonsalves was also quick to add that this would be done only with the support of the Parliamentary Opposition. The Vincentian Leader says that the CCJ is the only supranational institution that can command obedience with the architecture of the CARICOM institutions.

PM says marijuana decriminalization will not be license for impunity

The decriminalisation of marijuana has become a controversial issue in the region and Saint Lucia is no exception. During his address at the Judicial Conference on Sentencing which took place in Saint Lucia earlier this week, Prime Minister Allen Chastanet gave the assurance that his government is looking at the matter closely, while at the same time adding that the decriminalisation of the drug will not be a license for impunity.

First CIP-financed housing project in Dominica nears completion

Residents who were displaced by Tropical Storm Erica in 2015 will soon be in their new homes as the handover of the first completed units is expected to take place at the end of next month. The project which is financed through the citizenship by Investment programme does not only alleviate the critical shortage of housing resulting from the recent disasters of 2015 and last year but also illustrates the social benefits of the CIP.

Successful Interreg Caraïbes stakeholder meeting held in Saint Lucia

Interreg Caraïbes, a programme for French and European territories to undertake cooperation activities with their neighbours, hosted an informational session in Saint Lucia last week which was deemed a success. The event which was held in collaboration with the OECS Commission provided an insight into the programme so as to better enable project managers to access funding and engage in equitable and sustainable cooperation between the Eastern Caribbean Countries and the French West Indies.
