SLP asks : Will OKEU be privatised by government ?

The Opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party is urging the Allen Chastanet-led Administration not to pursue the privatisation of the Owen King EU Hospital, or any health service on the island, without the widest possible consultation with all stakeholders. Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition, Hon Phillip Pierre, says that such can come at a huge cost to the people, particularly the low income earners and marginalized.

Barbados Parliament to be dissolved, ahead of election announcement

According to the constitution of Barbados, the life of the Government has run out thus allowing for the dissolving of the Parliament. This means that the Freundel Stuart administration now has ninety (90) days within which to announce a date for the general elections. When that date is called, the Opposition Barbados Labour Party led by Mia Mottley, is hoping to unseat the Freundel Stuart Administration. They have been in campaign mode since the beginning of the year.

Venezuela more democratic than Barbados - Joseph

St Lucian born Dr Tennyson Joseph, a lecturer in political science who is also the Head of the Department of Government, Sociology and Social Work at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies, is slamming Barbados for supporting a vote against the government of Venezuela to hold elections in April without reaching an agreement with an opposition coalition. Dr Joseph has also declared that Venezuela is more democratic than Barbados.

Corruption on the rise in the Caribbean

Transparency International, an organisation dedicated to fighting corruption on a global scale, says that corruption is on the rise in the Caribbean. In the recently released Corruption Perceptions Index for 2017, four countries of the Eastern Caribbean were ranked, namely Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Dominica, St Lucia and Grenada, while in the immediate region Barbados had the highest ranking.

Martinique reports record arrivals in 2017

Martinique tourism authorities announced that a record 1,041,139 travellers visited the French overseas department in 2017. A little less than half of these visitors were cruise passengers who enjoyed the island during the 256 cruise ship calls made, and the balance represented stay over visitors.

CARICOM proceeding with Dutch territories applications for associate membership

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will soon start reviewing applications for membership from the Dutch territories of Curacao and Sint Maarten. Secretary General, Dr Irwin LaRocque, is expected to commence discussions to better determine their expectations of associate membership as well as the benefits these relationships could yield for the regional body. Further consideration will also be given to applications from the French Overseas territories of Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana.
