BARBADOS

Barbados, Morocco draft MOU on technical cooperation

A Memorandum of Understanding on technical cooperation has been drafted by the Kingdom of Morocco and Barbados, which would expand collaboration in areas such as agriculture, economic affairs, foreign affairs, health and tourism. Barbados currently benefit from a Moroccan grant fertilizer programme and Soil Fertility Mapping Project. Barbadians have also received scholarships from Morocco.

Council member for Grenada takes over Chairmanship of ECCB Monetary Council

During a handing over ceremony which is due to take place on Friday 27th July 2018, Council Member for Grenada, Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, will assume the Chairmanship of the Monetary Council of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB). Mitchell succeeds Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit, Council Member for Dominica. The Monetary Council is the highest decision making authority of the ECCB.

Karolin Troubetzkoy appointed new SLHTA President

Executive Director of the internationally acclaimed and award-winning Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet Hotel, Karolin Troubetzkoy, is once again President of the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA). She formerly served as President of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA). She assumed the leadership, from Sanovnik Destang, last week during the 54th General meeting of the association.

St. Lucia to upgrade international airport passenger capacity to over one million

According to the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Allen Chastanet, the loan has been approved for the construction of the new airport and works on the new facility will begin before the end of this year. The facility, which will have a capacity of over one million passengers, will boast new systems and services such as facial recognition technology, as well as delivery of passengers’ luggage to their respective hotels.

2018/2019 Budget to be presented on Wednesday

On Wednesday 25th July 2018, Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit will present the 2018/2019 budget presentation, after President Charles Savarin has delivered his address to the Parliament. This will be the first budget presentation since Hurricane Maria devastated the island.

GRENADA

Construction begins on US$20 million rum distillery in Grenada

A new rum distillery is soon to be opened in Grenada. The distillery which will produce up to one million litres of spirit annually has created fifty jobs locally with an additional one hundred over the next year. It will also be technologically advanced and environmentally sound. Prime Minister Keith Mitchell says the project will not only help boost the agriculture sector and diversify the economy, but will also promote Grenada as the origin of a unique blend.

OECS partners with IRENA on two key sustainable energy initiatives

The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission has partnered with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), an intergovernmental organization that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, on two key energy sustainable initiatives names the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA) and the SIDS Lighthouse Initiative (LHI).

Saint Lucia commits to Declaration of High Ambition on Climate Change

Saint Lucia has joined twenty-two other countries in signing a Declaration of High Ambition on Climate Change. The Declaration which was signed by the Minister with responsibility for Climate Change, Dr Gale Rigobert, calls for the United Nations Secretary General to focus the upcoming Climate Summit in September 2019, on the possibilities for delivering enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

France celebrates !

Last Saturday, 14th July, France celebrated its National Day which is also known in English as “Bastille Day”. A reception was held at the official residence of France, where the French Ambassador, H.E. Philippe Ardanaz welcomed many invited guests including His Excellency the Governor General of Saint Lucia. In delivering his speech, Ambassador Ardanaz spoke of the historic relationship between France and Saint Lucia, while emphasizing some important areas of collaboration namely education, climate change and security, among others.
