Last Sunday, the Opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party held its annual conference of delegates. Delegates from all seventeen constituencies were in attendance and by secret ballot voted for Philip J. Pierre as the Political Leader. Former Minister of Agriculture, Moses Jn Baptiste is the new chairman of the party and has replaced Claudius Francis.

On Monday, the Organisation of American States (OAS) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen their cooperation, placing particular emphasis on education and training. The said agreement is expected to improve the lives of their citizenry. The OAS comprises of 34 active members, six of which are also members of the OECS.
Despite strong words of caution, Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, has rejected Former Barbados Prime Minister’s advice regarding the appointment of Barbadian economist Avinash Persaud as his special economic advisor on economic recovery post-Hurricane Maria. In an address to the nation on Monday, Skerrit noted that Professor Persaud was ranked in the top ten economists in the world by a panel of leading experts.

Last month, the Government of Saint Lucia accepted prisoners from the British Virgin Islands following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma in the British overseas territory. The transfer of the prisoners has been a subject of much debate among the citizens of Saint Lucia. Former External Affairs Minister, who is also an opposition parliamentarian, Alva Baptiste, has also aired his views on the matter, not only on the assistance offered, but also by questioning the status of the British territory within the OECS and CARICOM.

The Opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party has extended congratulations to the United Socialist Party of Venezuela on its victory at the gubernatorial elections held last Sunday. The USPV won 17 of the 23 governorship. Newly elected political leader of the Saint Lucia Labour party, Philip J. Pierre, says it’s a significant win for the USPV.

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank posted a profit after three consecutive years in the black. This growth reflects the strength of the Eastern Caribbean dollar. The ECCB is continuing its forward momentum with the launch of a new four year strategic plan. According to the Governor, Timothy Antoine, the 2017-2021 Strategic Plan is a “new vision for a new era”.

Following a spate of gun violence taking place in the country of late, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, who is also the Minister responsible for National Security and Legal Affairs, says that he will stand by the police who use reasonable force against the gunmen. Gonsalves also assured the citizenry that his government is a lot of operations within the police force and is taking the crime situation seriously.

Another Saint Lucian national is in the spotlight in neighbouring French territory of Martinique. A 36 month prison sentence has been handed on a Saint Lucian national for drugs trafficking. The individual, whose name has not been disclosed, is said to be 28 years old and was sentenced along with two other French nationals. In addition to the sentence, they have also jointly pay a fine of 12 000 euros.
