Francophonie Day, March 20

Two performances have been showcased on Francophonie day, March 20th, at the French Ambassador’s Residence, upon invitation, thanks to the French Embassy in St Lucia’s cultural department and the Alliance Française of St Lucia, and support from the Institut Français.

Alé est rivé

The Myriam Soulanges dance company, created in 2010, is among the most renowned contemporary dance projects in Guadeloupe. Myriam Soulanges, founder of the company, choreographer and interpreter, has spent a long time between France, Guadeloupe and the USA, where she studied and worked. In 2009 she came back and settled in Guadeloupe, where she met Xavier Daniel-Chasseur, another great local dancer.
Their collaboration will give birth to two performances: « Alé é rivé » and « Mika heure locale ». These performances explore the questions of identity and spaces; « Alé é rivé » (a 20 minute performance), rewarded in 2010, was born from a reflection on necessity and feel of attachment to a land, a person, a memory, a space, or perhaps simply a smell or a sound. An endless quest for identity filled with paradoxes that upset the dancer’s body, switching from fluidity to chaos, constantly reminded of their origin, linked, connected, drawn by their memories...

Camaïeu

Pedro Izquierdo has been living in Guadeloupe over the past few years. Born in Spain, he studied drama and performing arts in Switzerland. His passion and commitment to theatre and circus led him to travel and perform worldwide. As a clown, he was always deeply influenced by Chaplin’s acting and mimes. Maybe this is the reason why « Camaïeu » is a silent mime show, combined with music, drama and dance. Izquierdo teams up with musician Diego Galaz who plays the musical part of « Camaïeu » (a 60 minute performance).
Miming generates a form of communication mainly based on body movements and facial expressions. This art may combine several ways of expression such as dance, gestures, acrobatics, magic, sounds, music, scenography... « Camaïeu » is a story which gives us a different perspective of what we are and what surrounds us. The performance is a moment of poetry and dream, a look at a homeless person who temporarily escapes his life by being transported from one world to another…
