France vows to combat female genital mutilation
(Question on female genital mutilation)
Female genital mutilation is unacceptable violence. The practice is a fundamental attack on the physical integrity of girls and women and brings with it serious physical and psychological consequences. Neither traditions nor customs justify such an undermining of basic rights.
To curb the practice and combat the circumcision of girls, health professionals must be mobilized and trained and must be vigilant. Many information and awareness-raising activities have been carried out in recent years through professionals and voluntary organizations. They must continue.
It’s also a factor in the right of asylum in France. It must enable girls to be protected from these unacceptable practices.
Combating female genital mutilation is part of combating violence against women. I remind you that the website www.stop-violences-femmes.gouv.fr exists and a free hotline is available seven days a week. My colleague Marlène Schiappa and I will ensure these actions continue. As the French President emphasized during International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, no cultural exception justifies the barbarity of female circumcision. We must pay special attention to migrant women seeking to escape female circumcision against them or their daughters./.
